It's time for my favourite pumpkin oriented holiday once again! I love Halloween, a celebration of light and autumn colours and a time to show our creativity by carving lovely lanterns. Of course it's also a time for trick or treating (which we might be a bit old for) and scaring each other to death, but personally I like to stick to candied apples and designing the best pumpkin of the year.

I have noticed this stool at 100% Design Exhibition and thought that it looked quite interesting and unusual. I made some notes and decided to to do more research on it.
Catherine Aitken, furniture and product designer, has graduated from Glasgow School of Art in 2006 and then successfully completed her course in Royal College of Art, London in 2011.
Description:
Responding to the concept Fade, these stools explore a gradual change in intensity through increasing and decreasing levels of colour and altering the presence of a particular material. Lengths of cotton cord are stitched together and then wrapped to a plywood plate and powder-coated steel base. These unique pieces combine function with visual intrigue.

During London Design week we have visited quite a few design fairs and exhibitions and noticed that a lot of fabric companies are keen on flower pattern. We do not usually use flower patterns in our design, as we are following our natural and minimalistic taste, but this could definitely work for people who love bright colours. You can use flower pattern on wallpapers, upholstery, bed linens or even rugs, but not all of it together.

I couldn't not to stop by Fenella Elms Ceramic's stand at DesignJunction design fair. I thought it was something really creative and unique. Fenella works with clay and creates those wonderful porcelain art pieces.
Flows
Mounted for wall hanging, these works are intuitively built in porcelain clay to create shifting perspectives. Individually made beads of clay joined to a sheet of porcelain with slip before the whole work is fired together to make one, single piece.
Edges
Fenella says that Aspects of her past career in mental health continue to influence her work with clay: the subconscious approach, a sense of rhythm, attention to detail and difference. She doesn’t seek to put her experiences into the clay, but marvel at how they emerge.
From the website:
There are 3 ceramic collections: Flows, Edges and Sculptures.

Edges
Very fine ribbons of mostly porcelain clay delicately aligned and joined with slip to create intricate structures. After firing, these structures are mounted (in the different ways illustrated below) for wall hanging.
Sculpture
Ribbons of porcelain in a mobius or twisted double helix form with fine porcelain interleaves to build structures that hold light and alter form.

Without a little touch of vintage, modern interiors can seem soulless. And without a modern context, vintage pieces can look too old-fashioned. But when you combine both, interiors get their balance.
Combine
Modern vintage works through unexpected pairings: when you choose something vintage, make sure something modern isn’t far away. Using fabrics and textiles in interior can help to balance the contrast between old and contemporary items. Hand-sewn quilts soft rugs and rough linens smooth out hard-edged modern or add a contemporary twist to more traditional abodes.
Give furniture space to breathe
Modern design requires clean surfaces and simple lines. So if you find a vintage piece of furniture, let it stand alone instead of cluttering it with accessories. Striking pieces can become sculptures in themselves.
Source from the high street
Combine vintage pieces with high-street buys. While vintage has lots of advantages, many high-street shops offer retro reproduction pieces that look just right beside their vintage counterparts.
Enjoy the process
None of the great interiors were created over one night. It is a process of looking and finding.

Sometimes we are inspired by an item, a concept, a colour or an atmosphere. Here are some things that inspired me recently:
