Denmark has often been found the happiest country in Europe and even the world. The rest of Scandinavia enjoys a cosy lifestyle that helps them get through the long, dark winters too. Words like Hygge and Lagom are just part of a whole lifestyle focused on enjoying the little things in life, making the most of keeping warm and having a home that is a joy to spend time in.

This includes layering warm blankets and textiles, creating snug spaces that are also beautiful and having a well-insulated home to keep out the chill. After all, it’s impossible to feel truly peaceful and cosy if the cold is getting in through uninsulated walls!

Keeping warm and comfortable is key and every Scandinavian country has its own approach to snug but chic interiors. Here, our friends from Insulation Express are take a look at the different Nordic interior styles and sharing tips on how to get the look.

White is a brilliant colour as it matches perfectly with everything. Minimal spaces love minimal accessories, so white lighting pendants would look ideal in a simple modern kitchen. Matt white pendants or pendants with copper/ golden elements are the most popular at the moment. Conran shop and Skandium have always got a good selection of simple white pendants to choose from.

Merry Christmas from Scandinavia - to our Scandinavian, German and middle-European readers. The Eve of the 24th is the traditional Christmas celebration time for many people around the world and, being Finnish myself, this is when we celebrate.

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVE!
Best wishes from Pia and Milena :)

Ekornes is a Scandinavian furniture brand, manufactured in Norway. They produce homely and extremely comfortable office chairs, sofas, mattresses and other accessories for the home. Their range of sofas comes in a variety of leather finishes and colours and although the style of the 'Stressless' sofa and armchair range is primarily quite classic / traditional, there are some great, contemporary corner sofa options. These products are definitely designed for those who love to relax and value comfort above all else.

We saw the Stressless range at the Scandinavia Show in Tobacco Dock, Wapping, last month.

From Their Website:
Ekornes ASA is the largest furniture manufacturer in the Nordic region and owns such brand names as Ekornes, Stressless and Svane. Stressless is one of the world's most famous furniture brands, and Ekornes and Svane are the best known brands in the Norwegian furniture market. Products are manufactured in Norway and marketed all over the world by a network of national and regional sales companies.

Ekornes' vision is to be one of the world's most attractive ergonomically designed suppliers of furniture for the home.

We have met Jalo Helsinki at Maison et Objet in Paris last year. This company came out with interesting and stylish ideas for Smoke Alarms. At the moment, they are working on 10year life battery Smoke Detectors and Fire Blankets with design elements. You can find Jalo products in Aram Store in London.

From Their Press Release:

JALO HELSINKITRANSFORMED SMOKE ALARMS INTO DESIGN

The Finnish smoke alarms Kupu and Lento bring safety and beauty into homes. This usually difficult and unaesthetic safety device has now been designed into an easy to use decorative article. From this unique idea Jalo Helsinki was established in 2009.
The core of Finnish design is crystallised in Jalo Helsinki. The idea is not only to create an impressive exterior but to enhance the relationship of man and the product. Internationally acknowledged top designers Harri Koskinen and Paola Suhonen’s new and brave way of seeing utility articles comes true in the smoke alarms of Jalo Helsinki.

Elegance meets playfulness: Kupu by Harri Koskinen and Lento by Paola Suhonen
The clear lined and elegant Kupu was noticed in the early stages when it got the Red Dot Design Award 2011. The following year Kupu won the 2012 Wallpaper* Design Award  and was selected as the Decor Item of the Year in a Finnish Muoto2012 competition.  It’s external casing has multiple different coatings: five colourful textile options and a modern chrome coloured metal surface. Due to its many different looks and character Kupu easily merges into the interior and yet stands out as a drop of colour in the room.
Paola Suhonen is well-known as the founder of fashion house Ivana Helsinki whose collections have been shown on the runways of New York Fashion Week and  the Paris Fashion Week. Fashion designers open-minded and adventures character really shows in Lento. It is wild and colourful butterfly, a moth, that stays on the watch when everybody else is sleeping. Because of its fun and playful look, it fits perfectly to nursery or to your first own home. Lento is stylish with a twist of rock attitude.

Safety can be beautiful and easy
We at Jalo Helsinki believe that when an object is a beautiful part of its surrounding, and is practical as well as easy to use people pay more attention to it, take better care of it and therefore increase the safety of their home. That is why we have especially paid attention to usability along with design and safety of Jalo Helsinki smoke alarms. Installation of Kupu and Lento is extremely easy as it only takes few seconds with the 3M-sticker – no power drill or screws needed. Also there are no tiny test buttons, but the whole external casing acts as a press switch for silencing false alarms and testing the performance of the product. Both Kupu and Lento are CE-certified.

Now it is easier than ever to give beauty and safety to the ones you love and care about.
Kupu and Lento are perfect presents for Birthdays, Family Christmases and sales promotions.

Vanessa Anyaeji, designer and blogger, has already written one good article for us, but she did not want to stop on that :) So please welcome her article about company called MENU.

For the Danish design house, Menu, an unremitting characteristic that comes to light in both concept and cooperation is the juxtaposition of elements; the past with contemporary, rural with urban and rustic with simplicity. Obsessing over clever solutions and creating functional details for our ever changing world is what inspires these designers. Their pieces demonstrate a focus on good, original and utopian design; creating objects that not only incorporate novel materials but is also available to all classes in society.
Menu keeps design fresh and exciting, using juxtapositions to show how intrigue can be created by clever contrasts. Most recently, Menu teamed up with Norm Architecture to create The New Norm Dinnerware, a set of tableware especially made for Höst, a new restaurant in Copenhagen. With Höst being a culmination of romanticism and modernity, the Nordic scenery and minimalism, it seems only fitting that Menu should design their table ware.
The tableware is entrenched in tradition and timeless Scandinavian aesthetic. The multiple parts, materials and colours present themselves as new ways of expression.  The focal point of The New Norm Dinnerware is around the essential white plate, which can be toned down with a smaller blue or grey plate – or even a granite slab to create a new atmosphere.
What I find intriguing about this collection is how much detail is taken to invoke the Nordic scenery. The light blue glaze conjures up thoughts of the Nordic summer evenings. The dark blue and grey glaze represents the vivid seas and cloudy skies. The brown wood tones convey the forest’s profundity, warmth and sensuality while the texture of the stone plate recalls the image of Nordic mountains.
