Choosing the Right Mattress
Every year up to 40% of the population – over 16 million of us – will suffer a bout of back pain. A good bed and a good mattress, providing correct support and comfort, has an important role to play in relieving and preventing back pain.
Today we will review different mattresses options.
Open-sprung mattress
An open-sprung mattress contains one long piece of wire coiled into springs. It also has a border rod of wire that gives the mattress a firm edge and helps retain its shape.
+
This is probably the cheapest option. Open-sprung mattresses are lighter than other mattresses, so easier to turn, and can be turned in all directions, which extends the life of the mattress.
-
Open-sprung mattresses are less responsive to your body and overall less supportive, as the springs are all connected.
Best for:
Occasional use, and ideal for children's bedrooms, as they're less expensive, so can be upgraded as they grow.
Pocket-sprung mattress
Pocket-sprung mattresses are more luxurious. They have up to 3,000 individual small springs housed in separate fabric pockets. They usually have hand-stitched sides for strong, stable edges.
+
Separate springs are more supportive to the body. Depending on the body weight there are different options for tensions - soft, medium or firm.
-
Pocket-sprung mattresses can be a bit heavier to turn. They are usually filled with natural materials, like lamb wool, which can exacerbate allergies. However, natural fillings as animals “hair” are considered to be the best option.
Best for:
The separate springs works ideal for two people of different weights. Some of the mattresses also come with two sides of a different firmness.
Memory foam mattress
Memory foam mattresses are composed of billions of viscoelastic cells, which respond to your temperature and weight.
+
Memory foam moulds to your shape and absorbs your weight, taking pressure off your joints.
-
Memory foam does not let the air go though and sometimes when you sink in to the foam it could become quite warm.
Best for:
It is very supportive and good for people with joint pain. Also it works good for allergy sufferers.
Latex mattress
Natural latex is white liquid tapped from the trunks of rubber trees. It is blended with synthetic latex and turned into latex foam.
+
Latex comparing to the foam is breathable and it will not overheat. Exceptionally durable, its resilient feel also makes it good for those who prefer a firmer bed.
-
Those mattresses have a more solid feel, and they can be heavy and difficult to move. Cheaper versions can develop lumps and body impressions.
Best for
Latex mattresses are goof for those with allergies and asthma, as latex doesn't harbour dust mites. It also has natural antimicrobial properties.
Sprung memory foam mattress
A sprung memory foam mattress is a hybrid of a pocket-sprung base and a memory-foam top layer.
+
It is a compromise between the responsiveness of a pocket-sprung mattress and the support of memory foam. There's also no need to turn the mattress.
-
The ‘sinking' sensation can put people off, which also means it isn't recommended for young children, in case they roll onto their face and breathing is inhibited.
Best for
It is good for people who still want the feel of a pocket-sprung mattress, as well as some extra comfort of a responsive memory foam layer.
I have recently purchased a Sprung memory foam mattress myself and have been quite happy with it. I wanted a mattress with coils for a better stability and support. I have chosen a pocket sprung, as it responds better to your body weight. A memory foam layer adds extra comfort, but does not make you to sink in too much.
